Husband and Wife Partners

Jeffrey Chan and Marisa Jill Whittaker Humphrey are husband and wife business partners and serial entrepreneurs. They are college sweethearts.

Team Humphrey Jeff & Marisa live north of Atlanta, Georgia, and with their three children. You might run into their children working (and perhaps complaining if they're supposed to be working) at one of their businesses. Spending time together with family and friends is what they love to do most, and is upon what their most fond memories are built.

You might run into their children working (and perhaps complaining if they're supposed to be working) at one of their businesses. Education

·       Marisa studied Russian and Duo-Lingual Parenting at Moscow State University in Russia immediately after the fall of communism. She studied Spanish, in Chihuahua, Mexico with BYU Study Abroad, and received her degree from the College of Fine Arts & Communications at Brigham Young University in Utah.

·       Jeff studied Art and Theatre in London and emerging free-press Communications in Moscow, Russia and in other Eastern Bloc independent republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He also received his degree from the College of Fine Arts & Communications at Brigham Young University in Utah.

Business Interests

·       The Humphrey’s business interests have each afforded them new opportunities to learn, meet new people, and travel. Between the two, they have visited 25 countries.

·       After graduation from BYU, Jeff did a communications internship at TBS. Then he got his securities and insurance license and did financial planning and broker/dealer recruiting. Later, he sold mortgages until the Humphreys opened Real Deals on Furniture (now Cotton Mill Interiors).

·       After college, Marisa did a communications internship at CNN. She then was a reporter and anchor in Dalton, Georgia, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and in Atlanta working on a political show. She then started “Big Byte Productions” and did multi-media development, including programming, desktop publishing, and technical writing for BellSouth, Hewlett Packard, and Synovus Corporation, among others.

·       Having never been in retail before, in 2003 the Humphreys opened a 2-acre furniture store in an old cotton mill.

·       The Humphreys formed Jackson & Harrison Imports (named after their two sons) in 2004 and imported furniture and home décor from China until 2014.

·       In 2006, the Humphreys co-founded and built a 60+ store franchise called Real Deals on Home Décor in the US and Canada with Marisa’s sister and brother-in-law. www.realdeals.net

·       Marisa designed her own jewelry line, “Marisa Jill Design,” for IMAX Home that was distributed across the country in 2013.

·       In 2015, the Humphreys purchased the old mill where their furniture had been located for 12 years in downtown historic Jefferson, Georgia. The Cotton Mill, a 118-year-old factory-turned-retail-destination location in North Georgia, now houses other tenants as well as the Humphrey’s businesses.

·       As an admirer of all things fashionable, Marisa loves playing dress up with customers at Marisa Jill’s Boutique, a chic apparel and accessory shoppe she opened in 2014 in a 102-year-old bank. (The fitting rooms are in the vault.) www.marisajill.com

·       Since purchasing the mill in 2015, Jeff has taken on the role of property manager, as well as part-time electrician, plumber, mason, carpenter and roofer. He managed the massive undertaking of overseeing the installation of a new roof, sprinkling system and alarm system in the over 350,000-square-foot old factory to bring it up to code. In 2017 he oversaw the buildout of The Mill Event Venue, the Humphrey’s latest business interest, and continues daily to improve and rebuild the old mill. www.cottonmilleventvenue.com

·       In July, 2017, the Humphreys renamed Real Deals on Furniture to Cotton Mill Interiors to be more cohesive with their other businesses at The Cotton Mill. (No one wants to get married at Real Deals...The Cotton Mill has a much better ring to it. Wink. Wink.)

Why the name change?

Why the name change?

Same Store. Same Owners. Same Real Deals. NEW NAME.

When we opened Real Deals on Furniture in 2003, I immediately fell in love with The Cotton Mill. It was always my dream to one day own the mill. After being a tenant for 12 years, on April 15, 2017 (tax day!) we purchased The Cotton Mill out of foreclosure. It is challenging to own a 118-year-old building, with its old bricks, sometimes leaky roof, but I still love the character, charm, and vibrant history of the place.

All-in-all, it is an incredible opportunity to own such a historic building and we take its history and place in the community seriously. We want it to once again be a vibrant hub of commerce in Downtown Historic Jefferson.

Since purchasing the mill, we've opened Cotton Mill Consignments above the main furniture showroom, and The Cotton Mill Event Venue. We are also opening The Cotton Mill Office Suites. We decided to rename Real Deals on Furniture to Cotton Mill Interiors because it is a more cohesive name as it relates to the other businesses at The Cotton Mill. (No one wants to get married at Real Deals...The Cotton Mill has a much better ring to it. Wink. Wink.)

History of The Cotton Mill

History meets Fabulous Home Furnishings

Shopping at Real Deals on Furniture is an experience like no other. The store is part of the historic Old Jefferson Cotton Mill and the mill is over 350,000 square feet in size. Cotton Mill Interior's two-acre showroom is where the corduroy finishing took place when the mill was operational. The massive equipment and looms are now gone, but in its place are beautiful home furnishings that make the old factory vibrant and alive again.

Below are photos of The Cotton Mill taken over more than a century.

Connie Hijar- General Manager

Though Georgia is now my home, I am originally from El Paso, Texas. I am the proud Mother of 2 lovely daughters one in Atlanta and one in Portland Oregon. Daughters, dogs and relationship building-three important things in my life. Did I mention good food, friends and a great bottle of wine doesn't hurt, either! My transition to CottonMill Interiors was a welcome change from the corporate environment that I have been accustomed to working for. My career started years ago in Portland Oregon with the World's Largest Chair. Now, I'm at Cotton Mill Interiors with the World's Largest Mattress. A little ironic! I have over 25 years of experience in the furniture industry. I've led wonderful teams over the years, many of them million dollar writers. You may have heard of a few of them, Bassett and Crate and Barrel, just to name a few. The experience at the Old Cotton Mill Interiors has been the most rewarding adventure that I have taken on in this industry. First of all, it's a 100 year old cotton mill, enough said! With the new trend being repurposing old buildings -Marisa and Jeff Humphrey, the owners of the Cotton Mill, were 14 years ahead! This space has charm and history. I am truly grateful for this amazing group of people that I work with each day! I welcome in our clients every day to see why Cotton Mill Interiors is different and what our amazing team can create for you!

"Hook em Horns"

You might have guessed that I am a Texas native by my opening statement... and you might be correct! Georgia is now my home where I live with a beautiful woman named Mandy. When I am not at Cotton Mill Interiors, you can find me on a golf course, jogging on a nature trail or sitting on the back deck gazing at the moon. Cheering on my Texas or Georgia teams in any sport has been known to cause temporary deafness to those around me. In other words, I REALLY like sports. Yoga, meditation and a good cup of coffee are the way I begin my mornings. I have been in management in several capacities over 25 years, though in furniture only since the turn of the century. That's given me 17 years to make sure that your're gonna leave here with a big smile on your face. The next time you, your friends or family are in the Jefferson area, stop and give me a holler! You may catch me riding a scooter throughout our showroom! That's when I'm  in "Chief Wahoo" mode.

Wikipedia's description of an outdoor enthusiast is pretty much spot on for me! "An outdoor enthusiast is a person who enjoys sports and activities in nature and wilderness areas." Hobbies include: hiking, fishing, downhill skiing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, shooting guns and, of course, decorating! Exploring the natural beauty and wonder of the world with my loved ones is my idea of the perfect escape from everyday life, but when I'm not enjoying the outdoors, Cotton Mill Interiors is where you'll find me! It's my new love! I am a decorating enthusiast as well, with a love for unique furnishing and home decor I guess it's safe to say that I enjoy creating beauty and being surrounded by beauty, which makes CottonMill Interiors a perfect fit for me. My job as buyer and merchandiser gives me the opportunity to shop and decorate for a living. I have the good fortune of being able to work with a team of awesome people who all share this common interest. I have 12 years experience in the retail and customer service industries. It is my passion to bring our clients the latest trends at the greatest prices and then create vignettes with new product to give you a full visual of how that product can pull together your home. Cotton Mill Interiors is not just a job for me, but a part of my life. I hope you will come join us and see how we are growing and let us be a part of your memories too.

Mandy Bolton-Office Manager

I was born and raised in Savannah, Ga. Growing up in a coastal city with historic beauty and charm, prepares you for a lifetime of respect for all things that once were. I learned at an early age that life is not to be taken for granted. One must live it, embrace it, learn from your failures and stay true to yourself. Family time in Savannah wasn't limited to just holidays-it was Sundays at my great grandparents house after church  where everyone gathered for dinner and conversation. The beach was a place to rejuvenate, energize and begin again. As a coastal girl, there is nothing i can relate to more than this quote by Rainer Maria Rilke, "When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with it's noise and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused." The beach is now a 5 hour drive, rather than a few steps, but home is what you make it and I have made it here in the Jackson county area. I'm a proud mom of 3 amazing kiddos- Brett, Andrew and Erin each one with their own personality and gift to offer this world. Needless to say, life is a little quieter at home now that each of them have left. Mike and I share a home with our inherited dog, Lily-or as my daughter reminds me, our grand puppy. Life is good, and I share it with an amazing man who is not only my partner in life, but also at work. Life is quiet at home with the exception of Mike's music.  I enjoy reading and have recently taken up gardening. Cotton Mill Interiors-formerly Real Deals on Furniture were both completely unknown to me up until about seven years ago when I received a call to come take a look at this place. My first impressions were this is a mighty long drive as I lived in Kennesaw and after walking in " Whoa, this place is huge. With over 35 years in retail and the last 20 in furniture, this is my home.

I am the original Georgia Peach, born and raise in Georgia, where manners and respect were learned at an early age. I am the mom of 2 lovely daughters and my 4 legged girl, Lyla. I've lived in the area most of my adult life- with the exception of a brief move to Nashville, Tennessee. Oh, what a great town Nashville is! There's shopping, food, shopping, history and did I mention shopping! Life has a way of bringing you back to your roots. In the early fall of 2016, I ended up back in this area. Nashville was fun, but it was time for Lyla and I to come home. With a broad background in furniture, design and placement, I can make your dreams a reality. In the words of Emma Lazarus, "bring me your tired, your wretched" and let me breathe new life into your home. Bring me your imagination and ideas, and I will use my knowledge and creativity in palettes, textures, layering and staging to create a lifestyle your family will enjoy for years to come. Residential and commercial property owners started out as customers, became my clients, and now are some personal friends. There is no greater blessing than to see my clients smile after making their dream come true.

I am the original Athenian! I was born and raised in Athens and graduated from UGA. While attending college, I had the opportunity to be "The Rockstar", playing drums in several original and cover bands throughout Georgia and South Carolina. Yes, it was the 90's and I was the long haired fool sitting behind the drum kit at the The Georgia Theatre or at your local watering hole. I am now happily married and a retired "Rockstar". I am Dad to two boys who have a passion and love for baseball. My down time with the boys is spent chauffeuring them back and forth to ball practice and coaching Little League teams. As described, I have a broad background that blessed me with a variety of skills, including graphic design and over 12+ years in Real Estate. As a broker, I helped many customers stage their homes to maximize value. Believe HGTV  when they say staging makes all the difference in selling a home. I myself am an avid DIY'er and probably watch all the shows on HGTV as you! Yes, when you use the words, shiplap-I understand exactly what you mean. Real Estate taught me how to listen to my clients...REALLY listen to their wants and needs. I pride myself by turning your dreams into a reality. Man Caves, Kitchens, Living Room-I can help you with them all-just ask for the ex- Rockstar or Chuck- I answer to both!
